Arnold Palmer’s ability to design a seamless yet challenging golf course is exemplified by the West Course, one of three designs located at Myrtle Beach National Golf Club in the heart of the Grand Strand. The appeal of the Lowcountry, paired with extensive hardwood forests and the hush of the natural landscape, make for a round of golf that embodies classic Carolina golf in every possible aspect.
While the course is open to the public, Myrtle Beach National’s sprawling clubhouse and well-maintained practice facilities evoke the feel of a private golf club. The serenity of the West Course is due in part to the absence of homes and development throughout the property. This 18-hole course plays through an expansive pine forest, providing golfers with a natural backdrop that is similar to that of its sister courses. Doglegs with winding fairways, an assortment of natural hazards, and bunkers that pepper the fairways are hallmarks of this memorable layout.
One of the West Course’s compelling stylistic traits is its friendly placement of tee boxes that open up to large fairways, making for a round of golf that won’t physically or mentally drain you. While this course is not quite as lengthy as King’s North, the signature par 3s here make up for the shorter range with water hazards bordering and encircling many of the greens – making them as dramatic and intimidating to play as they appear to the naked eye. It comes as no surprise, then, that the West Course has earned a 4.5-star rating in Golf Digest’s "Places to Play” guide.
The West Course’s gimmick-free, straightforward layout has lured golfers of multiple generations to play one of the most in-demand golf courses along the Grand Strand. Whether it’s the property’s rich history or captivating geography that brings you here, Myrtle Beach National welcomes all!
