Playing along the marshy waters of the Calabash River, Oyster Bay is one the Myrtle Beach area’s most memorable layouts, thrilling golfers with an unforgettable combination of beauty and challenge.
While the Dan Maples design enjoys significant local acclaim, the respect for the course extends to the regional and even national levels. Oyster Bay is consistently ranked among North Carolina’s best public courses (Oyster Bay is located just across the state line in Brunswick County, NC) and Golf Digest has ranked it among the nation’s top 50 public courses.
Why is Oyster Bay so popular? It starts with the beauty of the property, which includes three freshwater lakes, in addition to playing along the river.
Golfers don’t forget the views, which are the perfect complement to the layout’s traditional design. When water doesn’t come into play, Oyster Bay challenges golfers with tree-lined fairways and small (by contemporary standards), undulating greens.
It doesn’t hurt that the finishing stretch is so memorable, highlighted by the par-3 15th and 17th holes, both of which feature island greens. The 17th green, which is ringed by oyster shells, is a diabolical challenge.
Speaking of challenges, don’t be fooled by the yardage on the scorecard. Players look at the distance - 6,324 yards from the blue tees and 5,576 yards from the whites - and think Oyster Bay is "short.” This is a par-70 layout so the effective distance is much longer than what glancing at the card might otherwise indicate.
Another bonus to a round at Oyster Bay is the likelihood you will see an alligator, which are always a popular sight for traveling golfers.
As part of the Legends group, Oyster Bay is part of one of the area’s most popular golf packages, pairing the layout with Heritage Club and the Heathland, Moorland and Parkland courses at Legends Golf Resort to help create an unforgettable trip.
