Myrtle Beach’s most prestigious tee time awaits you at “The Granddaddy”. Seasonally, a refreshing mimosa is served on the course or each player is greeted by our club chef and treated to a cup of original low-country clam chowder. Designed by Robert White, the first President of the PGA of America, "The Granddaddy" is the birthplace of Sports Illustrated magazine.

Pine Lakes: A Storied Course Where Golf and Sports Illustrated Were Born

Given the nickname "The Granddaddy,” Pines Lakes Country Club is the oldest golf course in the Myrtle Beach area. Established in 1927, the course remains unmatched in beauty and tradition so many decades later. Part of the legendary nature of the course is attributed to the masterful work of the course architect who happens to be the first president of the PGA, Robert White.

Originally built upon natural dunes, the course has a different type of grass that isn’t found elsewhere in the area. The SeaDwarf Paspalum turf is known for tolerating high salt content, which is perfect for the seaside topography of the Carolina coast.

Located less than half a mile from the ocean, Pine Lakes serves as the site of the Myrtle Beach Golf Hall of Fame and is on the National Register of Historic Places. In 1954, a group of executives from Time-Life traveled to Myrtle Beach to play Pine Lakes as part of a corporate retreat, and it was during their pre- and post-round discussions there that the concept of a new weekly sports magazine, Sports Illustrated, was born.

The course’s most notable landmark is its large, white, elegant clubhouse residing on the seaside edge of the golf course. Reminiscent of old southern plantation homes, the expansive 18,000-square-foot space includes a golf shop, two ballrooms, a dining area, and plenty of history and memorabilia to go around.

Following a Scottish-themed layout, the 6,675-yard par 70 course boasts some of the most memorable golf holes along the Grand Strand. Lush fairways wind through natural dunes and freshwater lakes to create a picturesque layout for golfers of all skill levels. A masterful blend of the old and new is observed on the newly renovated front nine, which features contour changes to better channel storm water and the usage of the SeaDwarf Paspalum grass. The preservation of the back nine rests in the desire to maintain the tradition and spirit of the 1920s.

Long after the completion of a memorable round there, Pine Lakes Country Club leaves golfers basking in its timeless charm and rich history.
