There are lots of great courses to choose from when you book through MBGolf.com, and perhaps none are more creatively imagined and fun to play than those designed by the late, great Arnold Palmer, who left his mark with four fantastic Grand Strand golf courses, three of which are located on the same site.
Seven holes at Rivers Edge are set along the banks of the Shallotte River, providing some of the best Lowcountry views in the area. In true Arnold Palmer fashion, the course flows effortlessly with the landscape’s changes over creeks and around wetlands toward riverfront finishing holes on both nines.
Opened in 1973 and fully renovated by Palmer in 1996, King’s North at Myrtle Beach National has received significant acclaim as a top-ranked public course in the U.S. The design is stylish and contemporary, like the man who designed it, with a combination of woodlands holes, picturesque par 3s, dogleg par 4s and the famously risky par-5 6th – appropriately named “The Gambler,” where players must bet whether to play safely out to the right off the tee, or risk it and go for the island fairway and the opportunity to go for the green in two.
The second part of the trio of Palmer designs at Myrtle Beach National, SouthCreek is heavily tree-lined but still very playable, with short, reachable par 5s, an excellent mix of par-3 distances and par 4s that put a premium on accuracy over distance. One notable feature of SouthCreek is its expansive waste area bunkers, which provide the course exceptional visual appeal as well as a real challenge to navigate.
Palmer’s third course at Myrtle Beach National is the West Course, which like King’s North plays in development seclusion with no houses to be seen throughout its 18 holes. Like the other two Myrtle Beach National designs, tall pines are a key element, especially off the tee, and once again accuracy and touch around the greens are of great importance.
